unusual fish in the brirish isles
« on: November 05, 2005, 07:36:54 pm »
so on the subject of weird and wonderful rare fish lets start from the small ones up to the big >stone loach, weatherfish to found in stillington.thorpe beck down to billingham bottoms, roufe east rounton pond apv angling club, bleak the swale, pumpkin seed found at whessoe road pond think the british record comes from there, bitterling dont know of any in the north east, same for top mouth gudgeon, zander closest are in the trent i beleive, wallyeye were in the norfolk broads i think the record came from the delph in the 1920s,lampreys are common both types but the sea lamprey is very very rare, eels are european and american i think, wels catfish are to be found in grafton mere boroghbridge, sturgeon are no longer present in any great numbers in our rivers cos of obstructions but i think either defra or the bern convention have mentioned this to the uk and plans are to made to restore this native fish back to uk rivers properly using french stock i beleive, grayling are common but declining, arctic char are native to britain but very localised to a few lakes in cumbria and scotland, a refuge is set up in northyorkshire in one of the big resevoirs there but i aint going to name the water, brook trout can found in bishopton wind surfing lake and used to be in larners lake great ayton, vendace are only to be found in two english lakes in cumbria and were present in castle loch in years gone by but are now extinct in both scotish waters, schelly or skelly are to found in a few cumbrian lakes ulswater is one of em and red tarn i think but are on the critical list same as its sub species which lives in wales the gwynrd and the famous loch lomand powen, alis and twaite shad are on the increase again in some of our english rivers the severn and wye i think still get good runs of these freshwater herring usually in may time, ten spined stickle back never seen one or heard of any in the northeast, bullheads are comon in upland rivers and streams that are free from pollution a good sighn of good water quality, silver braem are a seperate species to common bream to be found at farmire trout fisheries knaresbrough n/yorks,black and brown bullheads are confined to a few waters in the south of england, burbot were once so common that they were used for pig feed and were thought that they would never run out how wrong we were, but again this fish is under threat in most of europe now and again i think the bern convention have had thay say in the restocking of the only freshwater member of the cod family, these were found in eastern flowing rivers tha same as barbel but the burbot went as far as scotland  thought now to be extinct but one jus never knows, esp when all these reprts of small catfish are being reproted from the trent which used to the no1 river for burbot in years gone by,to the untrained inexperenced angler a burbot may look like a catfish, salmon and sea trout are all over the uk esp in the north....or and one more the houting i knwo nothing about it at all,so if ive missed any thing and i know for a fact i have ----name that fish

Large and small-mouthed bass were stocked in some lakes in the south in the 1920's and 30's  - not very successfully

Walleye never bred in this country, so if there's any left they must be about 80 years old  :P

Grass carp - stocked anywhere except The Oaks in the north-east?

Spined Loach - very very rare now - confined to East Anglia.

Theres vast numbers of silver bream in the river foss in york, caught thousands as a kid and I even think i may have had a british record a few times without realising it at all as it was only 14oz up until a few years ago and i had a few fish bigger than that, although they could have been bream/silverbream hybrids?

my biggest dace is 1lb 2oz, whats yours mr fisk?

In order to shut you up I offer a wager, I will catch a british record fish in the next 2 years and if I do not I will pay £100 to children in need,  if I do you will pay £100 to children in need and then £100 pound for every record I break after that.
