Different rods
« on: February 16, 2012, 09:23:59 pm »
Right guys, I'm gonna put the cat among the pigeons,I'm a big believer in horses for courses, but! appart from wanting to own them is there a real purpose for all these different rods? ok carp rods speak for themselves, dif Tcs, for casting and specimen fish, and fly rods are an exeption, quiver tips are neccesary, but why so many? there are so many float rods out there it makes your head spin, and what is a match rod? and then you get an advertisement for, the best float/ledger rod on the market for the money, so why buy a float rod and a ledger of which im told is a quiver tip!and a waggler?, I was told by my younger brother who was a tees/ swale angler for many years with great success, that when the John Wilson avon quiver was introduced it was all the rod a guy needed on the river, same thing said by the guy that owns my local anglers shop, I bought one, among many others I now own, now there is a J.W avon barbel, I got a wychwood rogue instead, and I know the price reflects the quality of the rod, same with the guns I owned, but! I always went for the middle of the road, servisable and did the same job, as most of you know I'm a newbie, so im not lecturing I.m asking, polite replies please lol,....and then we.ll start on reels , boots, clothing, bivvys, ( a tent by any other name ) lol only jokin  ;) or am I ?

i just think its down to how many different styles of fishing your wanting to do, i mean one day you might want to go barbel fishing so youl need a barbel rod, other days stickfloating so youl need a rob suitable for the job, pellet wag, distance feeder work, short range- snake lakes say a 9-10 footer, the list is endless as you say but i reckon if your fishing once or twice a week and your seriously in to it, id reither save that bit of extra money and get the better quality rod thats deffinately gona do what it says when i want it to do it. ;)

im certanly not the best angler by far, but in my opinion, i have a silstar 13ft waggler match witch i was told is made for handleing match fish, whitch years ago were small fish with the odd larger fish through in, haveing said that it has handled carp to 7lb on light lines, and it has a through action. but my tfg 10ft compact tip rod i find does all the pond work i require off it, good for bomg, method, or feeder work, so are we getting to much off the bull of these companys just so they can sell  gear. your guess is as good as anybodys.
if it never bobs its my float,

nowt wrong with that wezzy, we all get first class gear at good prices when you have a sale mate,
what i was trying to say was we might be the average angler just because we have gone a purchased the latest rod for what ever, doesent mean its going to make us any better. i used to race motor cycles and could not afford the latest bikes with all the trick parts, but i still won races and championships. because i could use what i had to its best. when we can out fish the rods we have then go for a better one.
if it never bobs its my float,

i like shiney too,but a lot of the rods are just labells and no differant to the before,a name sells to some folk,i was tricast and drennan through and through but am purchasing a lot cheaper rods these days and getting exactely the same performance,  infact a lot cheaper.

but there is a differance,a stick rod is myself prefer a tippy rod,for the smaller species, tend to use a long rod or a medium action through action rod when using big sticks on rivers for the likes of chub and barbs.then there,s me multipuropose drennan waggler rod, drennan super waggler the im8 version which handle the larger species and have had carp up to 15lb.if its all carp venue im fishing then ile use my drennan carp waggler.

feeder rods i have my preferances, prefer not to use avon tips when fishing for barbel dont see the point, but have on occasions used them when bites are hard to see,and only use mono on these,my main barbel rods i use braid and dacrons.

i own more feeder rods than say match rods sticks etc, only because of the venues i fish and differant lenghs to suit so a range of weights and lenghs are needed.float rods i own 9 ov and can honestely say only 3 get used, would i part with the other, well got rid of 3 recentely, but the others ............o no cos they is all new and shiney.

ive learned me lesson now,got me stalking gear in 1 corner,me match gear in another,me pole gear in another,me predator gear in other.then in the middle ive got me box which looks like a futuristic sputnik.

and have now hung up me waders and me boots aswell as me suits cos the slugs will be back soon and not nice when they get in ya wellie boots.

so tend not to take as much as i used to,although sometimes wish i brought this and that.

I only have a Garbolino 12ft match Rod, a TFG 8ft compact tip and a Maver blue vega 11m pole with 1 top kit...... Gets me by :) The only thing I find is that the TFG Compact is very stiff and takes the fun out of it a little bit. All the action is in the tip and thats about it.

But.... New Job = more money   ::)

Soo.... 2 new carp Mini 10ft tip rods and 2 new inception 4000 is my next buy. Then after that ill be looking to get a new pole.
