Should we allow guests or should we be a private forum

Right lads. The cabin is getting bigger. We have a lot more people with a lot more to say about themselves. Which is brilliant.
BUT Unfortunatly , due to the pc brigade , if it is an open forum viewable to everyone, we cannot allow you to have opinions that will upset the public , or that can be viewed as slander or in any way make the cabin liable.

So , to counter act this , we can make the cabin a private forum so only members can see the content. People who want to be members will still go through the same joining process but they will not be able to read our posts until they are members. People outside the forum cannot read our posts , therfor we cant be held responsible for any slander etc. It also means that silly things dont need to be moderated as harshly etc etc.

Let me know your thoughts on here.

If you're wanting to make the forum wider and more interesting to attract new folk to join you have to keep it open

If you make it private all that happens is that members who fall by the wayside and dissapear don't get replaced and the forum withers and dies

Anyway private or open it does'nt really matter when slanser or libalous posts are on a forum as they have a habit of getting out and they're still libalous or slandorous and just as lible to get folk into bother

Private.. as stated before most of the guests who view are from overseas ip addresses

I can see Brian's point of view but a sometimes it can get a little risque I think private. That way you could post a disclaimer stating that the content can get lively and if you don't like it don't join, not sure if that covers the forum legally in the case of slander etc but at least you would have some defence.

Why not do both. The forum I run for a car club does. You have an area for guests to bring in new members, then a members area for forum members and in the case of the car club there is also a room that is totally private for just members of the car club. So you just need to moderate the public areas and keep your slagging off in the private areas.
I run the same software that zimmo does and it is relatively easy to do.
